Credentials of Mental  Health Professionals

Psychiatrist (M.D.)

Medical doctor with special training in Psychiatry (the study of the mind.) The only mental health professional who can prescribe drugs. Must be a licensed physician in the state in which he or she practices, board eligible, or certified by the American Board of Psychiatry. 

Clinical or Counseling Psychologist Master's degree (M.A.)or doctorate (PH.D.) in psychology. Doctoral level psychologist should be licensed by the Maryland State Board of Examines of Psychologist. Master level psychologist should be supervised by a licensed psychologist.
Doctor Of Psychology (Psy.D) Doctorate in clinical psychology. Licensed by the Maryland State Board of Examiners. 
Psychology Associate   (Ph.D.,Psy.D.) Master's degree or doctorate (Ph.D./Psy.D.) in clinical psychology but is not eligible for or completed the requirements for licensure. Psychology Associate must be approved by the Maryland Board of Psychologist and practice under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist.
Certified Professional Counselor (CPC) Master's degree or doctorate in professional counseling. Certified by the Mental Health State Board of Examiners. 
Clinical Social Worker (ACSW,LCSE,LCSW-C) Master's of Social Work (MSW) with specialization in clinical practice. Should be accredited by the Academy of Certified Social Workers or licensed by the State of Maryland. 
Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Specialist Master's degree in psychiatric nursing: certification requires two years of supervised clinical practice and licensed by the State of Maryland.
Mental Health Counselor (MMH) Specialized training in clinical setting, certified in Maryland as " physician's assistant/mental health. Master's degree, must pass exam approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners.
Nationally Certified Counselor Master's Degree or doctorate in professional counseling. Certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors.
Rehabilitation Counselor Master's degree in job and career counseling.
Pastoral Counselor Clergy with training in Clinical Pastoral Education, usually trained in social work, psychology or nursing: certification from American Association for Clinical Pastoral Education: certification optional in Maryland.
Paraprofessionals Mental Health aides with some training. Usually work under a trained professional in a clinical setting: mental health associations. 
Dance Therapist (ADTR:DTR) Masters degree in dance/movement therapy. Credentials are awarded by the American Dance Therapy Association. DTR, Dance Therapist Registered, graduate of an approved Master's program, minimum 2 years clinical work with 48 hours supervision and pass a review process: ADTR, Academy of Dance Therapist Registered, only ADTR approved fro private practice and to supervise DTR. 
Master's Addictions Counselor (MAC) Master's degree or doctorate in professional counseling with a specialization in addictions. Certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors.
Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) Master's degree or doctorate in professional counseling with specialization in clinical counseling. Certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. 

Art Therapist, Registered ( ATR-ATR-BC)

Master's degree in art therapy and specialized training in several clinical settings and a post-graduate clinical art therapy experience supervised by an ATR. Registered by American Art Therapy Credentials Board. Board certified by Art Therapy Credentials Board.

ACOA  Adult Children of Alcoholics
ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ALU Alternative Living Unit. A community Residence, usually operated by a private agency, which provides residential services to one to three individuals who have disability, such as mental illness.
ARD Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee. Body composed of teachers and other professionals which is responsible for admitting students with disabilities to special education , reviewing their progress or dismissing them from special education.

CM Case Management/Case Manager
COMAR Code of Maryland Annotated Regulation
CSA Core Service Agency. A local mental health authority responsible for planning, developing, managing and monitoring  publicly - funded mental health services for persons with mental illnesses within a defined geographic area. 
DHMH Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. An executive department of state government responsible for all health related issues. Also known as the "State Health Dept." All  state-funded mental health agencies report to this department.

ECT Electro-convulsive therapy
EMDR  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
LCC Local Coordinating Council for Residential Placement of Handicapped Children. An interagency committee of major agencies dealing with children and adolescents in a  county( Juvenile Services, the school system, Department of Social Services, Department of Mental Health). The committee reviews appropriate placements fore disabled children and adolescents who do not easily fit into a county human service system about the groups home level. 
LMB Local Management Board. County based governing board which addresses issues related to children, youth and their families.
MA Medical Assistance. Maryland's name for the Medicaid program. 
MAPSS  Maryland Association of Psychiatric Support Services. A professional and advocacy group composed of most of Maryland's community rehabilitation and residential programs for adults with long-tem mental illnesses. 
MHA Mental Hygiene Administration. The state agency which is responsible for funding and overseeing all state-supported mental health services. these include all state psychiatric facilities and community mental health centers. MHA is under the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
MHAC Mental Health Advisory Committee. County-based citizens' committees established by state law which advise certain state and county official son local mental health needs and issues.

PRP Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program. Community-based rehabilitation program fro children and adults who have serious or chronic mental illnesses which provides socialization and job-readiness or pre-vocational training.
PTSD Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
RRP Residential Rehabilitation Program. Community - base programs providing supportive housing and relative services for adults with long-term mental illness.
